Ask questions in plain language across all your KOL data. ### SteepRock Embedded Intelligence AI Analytics for Medical Affairs and Commercial Teams ### SteepRock Embedded Intelligence SteepRock Embedded Intelligence is an AI analytics service that works across all of a client's contracted data as a single intelligence environment. Medical affairs and commercial teams ask questions in plain language and get finished, sourced work back: KOL profiles, congress strategies, advisory board plans and executive briefs. It is delivered through the SteepRock Opinion Leader Management System (OLMS™) and works across the Opinion Leader Analytics (OLA®) data layer. Read the case study AI assistant that automates analysis and delivers actionable insights in real-time. Use thematic trends to identify patterns, anticipate shifts and uncover opportunities. Sentiment Analysis to help you understand market attitudes and behaviors to refine strategies. Generative AI creates tailored summaries and reports for faster decisions. ### What is SteepRock Embedded Intelligence? SteepRock Embedded Intelligence is AI analytics for medical affairs and commercial teams at pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device companies. It is delivered through the SteepRock Opinion Leader Management System (OLMS™) and works across the Opinion Leader Analytics (OLA®) data layer, the client's own OLMS engagement records and the client's documents as one intelligence environment. A user asks a question in plain language, and SteepRock Embedded Intelligence assembles the answer at once from the sources the client licenses, which can include publications, clinical trials, grants, guidelines, congress and education activity, digital presence, claims and referral networks. What comes back is finished work a team can use: KOL and HCP profiles, ranked expert lists, congress strategies, advisory board plans, MSL engagement plans, account briefs, executive presentations and intelligence digests, delivered as slide decks, Word documents, PDFs or workbooks, or by email on a schedule. SteepRock Embedded Intelligence helps teams identify, profile, and engage KOLs, DOLs, HCPs, healthcare organizations and payers, and it plans engagement from more source data than a CRM holds, including Veeva call records a client loads into OLMS. For clients that run grants and investigator initiated study programs on EGS™ and ISTS™, it reads across the funding record as well. Every answer follows written rules built for regulated life sciences work. Each figure is labeled confirmed or inferred, gaps are declared, every claim traces to a connected source, an attached file or the user's input, and a number that fails its plausibility check is withheld with an explanation. Each user sees only what that user's OLMS permissions allow. SteepRock Embedded Intelligence runs on Claude from Anthropic inside the client's private, access controlled workspace, SteepRock does not use client confidential information to train any AI model, and the service is in production today with clients that include three of the five largest pharmaceutical companies. SteepRock Embedded Intelligence comes from SteepRock, Inc. of Washington, Connecticut, which has 25 plus years of experience delivering single tenant SaaS to life sciences manufacturers. It is a life sciences analytics service and is unrelated to embedded intelligence in electronics or industrial hardware. ### Customer Success, the Epicenter of Everything We Do - “You have NO idea what this means. The users find the claim, contact and referral network information very helpful.“ Senior Manager - I have found it to be simple and efficient to enter insights into SteepRock. Customer & Disease Strategy Lead SteepRock Embedded Intelligence is SteepRock’s AI analytics service for medical affairs and commercial teams. It works across every data domain a client licenses as a single intelligence environment, answering plain-language questions and producing finished deliverables such as KOL profiles, congress strategies and executive briefs. It is in production with clients today. ### What data does SteepRock Embedded Intelligence use? It uses the data a client licenses through SteepRock plus the client’s own documents. Depending on the license, that includes the client’s OLMS engagement records, OLA’s publication, clinical trial, congress, claims and referral data, payment and transparency disclosures such as CMS Open Payments, and provider identifier and registry data. ### Which AI model does it run on? SteepRock Embedded Intelligence runs on Claude, from Anthropic, inside the client’s own private, access-controlled workspace. The model isn’t what makes the difference: the connected data, the rules it works under and how each session is run are. ### How does it avoid made-up numbers? It labels every figure as confirmed or inferred and declares gaps instead of filling them. It also withholds results it can’t trust. Every claim traces to a connected source, an attached file or the user’s input. See a real example. ### Is SteepRock Embedded Intelligence a CRM, or does it replace Veeva? No. SteepRock isn’t a CRM vendor. SteepRock is a market development service provider that helps medical affairs and commercial teams identify, profile, and engage KOLs, DOLs, HCPs, HCOs, and payers, and its team works with the client’s team on the analysis and planning. SteepRock Embedded Intelligence plans engagement from more source data than a CRM holds, and clients that use Veeva CRM can load their call records into OLMS so it works across them as well. ### What return can a team expect? In one measured deployment, a nine-person commercial team completed 143 deliverables in 10 weeks, which annualizes to about 756. That recovered about 1.1 FTE of capacity in the base case. See the full math. ### Does SteepRock Embedded Intelligence use current AI tools? Yes. SteepRock Embedded Intelligence runs on Claude, a current frontier model from Anthropic, and the underlying models are updated over time as part of the service. What makes the results different is what the model is connected to: the client’s licensed SteepRock data, its OLMS records and its own documents, in one session. ### What is the difference between OLA, OLMS and SteepRock Embedded Intelligence? OLA® (Opinion Leader Analytics) is SteepRock’s healthcare data search engine that identifies and profiles experts and organizations in every disease area. OLMS™ (Opinion Leader Management System) is the client’s system of record for its engagement with those experts. SteepRock Embedded Intelligence is the AI service, delivered through OLMS, that works across OLA, OLMS and the client’s other licensed data at the same time. ### Do we need OLMS to use SteepRock Embedded Intelligence? Yes. SteepRock Embedded Intelligence is delivered through OLMS and works across the OLA data layer, so it requires an active OLMS license and access to OLA. New clients license the three together. ### Can existing OLMS clients add SteepRock Embedded Intelligence? Yes. A client with an active OLMS license and OLA access adds SteepRock Embedded Intelligence under a Statement of Work, and it works across the data that client already licenses. ### Is SteepRock Embedded Intelligence a chatbot? It works through a conversational interface, and what it produces is finished work: profiles, plans, briefs, charts and documents built from the client’s connected data, with every figure labeled confirmed or inferred and every claim traceable to its source. ### Do users need to know how to write prompts? No. Users ask questions the way they would brief an analyst. For recurring work, SteepRock’s team can build and test a prompt library with the client and write down the expected result for each prompt, as it did in the published P&T case study. ### Can SteepRock Embedded Intelligence use our own documents? Yes. Users can attach files, including by pasting a file’s URL, and a client’s approved product and context documents can be connected so answers draw on them. A claim based on an attached file cites that file. ### Can SteepRock Embedded Intelligence create slide decks and documents? Yes. It generates presentations, Word documents, PDFs and workbooks from the analysis in a session, along with charts and summaries. ### Can it send reports on a schedule? Yes. Users can schedule recurring reports, and each report email arrives with the generated deck or workbook attached. ### Can SteepRock Embedded Intelligence use our Veeva CRM data? Yes, when the client loads its Veeva call records into OLMS. SteepRock Embedded Intelligence then works across those records together with OLA data and the client’s OLMS engagement history, under each user’s permissions. ### Does it include CMS Open Payments data? Yes. Payment and transparency disclosures, including CMS Open Payments records, are part of the OLA data layer, so a profile or a conflict check can show what manufacturers have reported paying a physician. ### Does it include patient claims data? When the client licenses it. SteepRock provides licensed, de-identified claims derived analytics for the therapeutic areas and indications in the client’s license, and SteepRock Embedded Intelligence works across them with the rest of the data. De-identified claims data is used within the system and the deliverables it produces and is not shared as a standalone dataset. ### Will it tell us when the data is too thin to answer? Yes. It declares the gap, says what is missing and withholds a figure that fails its plausibility check. In a published client session it declined to present a payer mix built from 231 claims after comparing it with 447,957 national claims for the same drug codes. ### Does a person still review the output? Yes. SteepRock Embedded Intelligence produces the analysis and the record behind it, with its sources named, and the client’s team reviews the work before it is used. It does not approve a grant, set a fair market value or clear a conflict of interest. ### Is our data used to train AI models? No. SteepRock does not use client confidential information to train, validate or test any large language model, and that commitment is written into SteepRock’s client agreements. ### Who can see what in SteepRock Embedded Intelligence? Each user sees only what that user is permitted to see. SteepRock Embedded Intelligence queries OLMS under the user’s own session, so the role, territory and record permissions set in OLMS apply to every answer, including the separation between medical and commercial users. ### Can an administrator read my conversations? No. No client administrator role can view another user’s conversations in SteepRock Embedded Intelligence. ### Can SteepRock Embedded Intelligence change records in OLMS? No. Its data tools are read only. It reads the client’s records to answer questions and does not write changes back to OLMS. ### Where is SteepRock Embedded Intelligence hosted? SteepRock runs its own servers in a Tier 1 colocation facility that holds SOC 2 certification, and no hosting provider has access to client data. Client work happens in the client’s private, access controlled workspace, and all SteepRock employees and contractors sign confidentiality agreements, with employees trained annually. ### Does our data leave SteepRock’s systems when we use the AI? To answer a question, the content needed for that question is processed by the AI model providers SteepRock uses, with Anthropic’s Claude as the primary model. Data stored by SteepRock is encrypted at rest with AES-256. ### Is SteepRock Embedded Intelligence priced per user or per question? Neither. SteepRock licenses the technology and gives access to the client’s team. Authorized users are approved when the system is set up, and there is no meter on questions or documents. ### How long is a SteepRock Embedded Intelligence license? A standard license runs for a twelve month term. ### How long does it take to get started? Implementation typically takes about a week. Training is quick, and users get support from SteepRock’s team as they work. ### Can we see a demonstration? Yes. SteepRock gives product demonstrations to life sciences manufacturers considering a license. Contact us with your disease area and the questions your team needs answered. ### Is SteepRock Embedded Intelligence used by medical device companies? Yes. SteepRock works only with life sciences manufacturers in pharma, biotech and medical devices, and its published results study comes from a commercial team at a top 10 global medical technology company. ### Is SteepRock Embedded Intelligence only for medical affairs? No. Medical affairs, commercial, marketing, market access, and grants and investigator initiated study teams use it, and each user works within the permissions of that user’s role. ### Does SteepRock Embedded Intelligence work with grants and investigator initiated studies? Yes. For clients that run their programs on EGS™ (Educational Grants Solution) or ISTS™ (Investigator Sponsored Trial Solution), SteepRock Embedded Intelligence reads across the funding record, the investigator’s profile and the engagement history in one session. Teams use it for funding history, cycle time reporting, conflict checks and fair market value checks. ### Can SteepRock Embedded Intelligence report on charitable contributions and sponsorships? Yes, when they are managed in EGS. EGS handles independent medical education grants, charitable donations and corporate giving, sponsorships of third party meetings and fellowships, and SteepRock Embedded Intelligence can report across all of them along with the research programs in ISTS. ### What is AI analytics for medical affairs? AI analytics for medical affairs uses AI to answer a medical affairs team’s questions about experts, institutions, evidence and engagement from the team’s own records and licensed data, with results the team can defend. SteepRock Embedded Intelligence is SteepRock’s AI analytics for medical affairs and commercial teams: users ask in plain language and receive sourced, finished work built from OLA, OLMS and the client’s licensed data. ### Is SteepRock Embedded Intelligence a medical affairs AI platform? Yes. It is the AI service on SteepRock’s platform for medical affairs and commercial teams, delivered through OLMS and working across OLA, so the AI, the expert data and the engagement record are on one platform. ### What is natural language analytics in pharma? Natural language analytics means asking an analytics question in plain language and getting the analysis back without building a query or a dashboard. In SteepRock Embedded Intelligence a user can ask which KOLs in a therapeutic area have published, run trials and treated patients in the last two years and receive a sourced answer from the client’s licensed data. ### Can SteepRock Embedded Intelligence identify KOLs in our therapeutic area? Yes. It identifies KOLs, rising investigators and DOLs from the publications, clinical trials, congress activity, claims, referral networks, Open Payments records and digital presence in OLA, and cites the records behind each one. The underlying identification data comes from OLA and SteepRock’s identification and profiling services. ### Can SteepRock Embedded Intelligence build a KOL profile? Yes. A profile brings together a physician’s publications, trials, congress presentations, Open Payments history, institutional affiliations and the client’s own engagement history in OLMS, with each item traced to its source. Customer and KOL profiling was nearly half of the 143 deliverables in the published ten week study. ### Can SteepRock Embedded Intelligence tier or rank KOLs? Yes. The user sets the criteria, such as recent publications, trial leadership or congress activity, and SteepRock Embedded Intelligence ranks the experts against them, labeling which inputs are confirmed and which are inferred so the team can see and adjust the basis of the ranking. ### Can SteepRock Embedded Intelligence map KOL networks and influence? Yes, from the data the client licenses. It can show how experts connect through referral networks, shared clinical trials and institutional affiliations, and which experts reach the clinicians who matter in an account or a territory. ### Can SteepRock Embedded Intelligence identify digital opinion leaders? Yes. OLA includes digital presence and selected social media content, so SteepRock Embedded Intelligence can identify DOLs in a disease area, measure their digital influence separately from traditional KOL influence and show where the two overlap. ### Does SteepRock Embedded Intelligence come with a KOL database? It works on OLA, SteepRock’s healthcare data search engine covering every disease area, together with the client’s own OLMS records. Clients receive the data through their OLA license, and SteepRock Embedded Intelligence makes all of it searchable in plain language. ### Can SteepRock Embedded Intelligence help plan advisory boards and speaker programs? Yes. It drafts advisory board plans and congress strategies from experts’ publications, trials, congress activity and past engagement with the client. Speaker selection and qualification are handled by SteepRock’s AI Speaker Qualifier. ### Can SteepRock Embedded Intelligence summarize MSL insights? Yes. It analyzes and summarizes the engagement records in the client’s OLMS, including field interactions recorded there, for a period, a product or a region. SteepRock ECHO captures and structures field medical interactions at the source. ### What AI tools do MSL teams use for engagement planning? MSL teams using SteepRock Embedded Intelligence ask which experts to see next, why, and what each conversation should cover, and receive a plan built from OLA data and their own OLMS engagement history. ### Can SteepRock Embedded Intelligence analyze our investigator initiated study program? Yes, for programs run on ISTS. It reports cycle times, funding history by investigator and institution and the output of funded studies, and checks an investigator for conflicts across the speaker program, the engagement history and Open Payments. ### Can SteepRock Embedded Intelligence report on sponsorship requests? Yes, when sponsorship requests are managed in EGS. It can report how long requests take from submission to decision and what has been funded, by program, institution or period. ### Why our clients love us: #### Insights ### We build products for better decision-making #### Speed ### We configure and deliver quickly #### Partnership ### Our systems support how you work #### Big Data ### We continuously feed the data you need ## OLMS: KOL Management Software for Pharma | SteepRock https://www.steeprockinc.com/olms OLMS is KOL management software for pharma: a compliant 360° view of every expert and account, combining external activity with internal engagements. ### Build Stronger Connections ### With the key stakeholders driving your success ### OLMS™ ### (Opinion Leader Management System™) Our Stakeholder Management System is a one-stop source that provides a 360° view of the key individuals, patient/professional organizations and accounts that impact your brand. SteepRock identifies, profiles and engages the KOLs, DOLs, HCPs and payers who shape a therapy's market. ### Market Development Services for Life Sciences SteepRock helps medical affairs and commercial teams build the expert ecosystem around a therapy before, during, and after launch. We identify and profile the KOLs, DOLs, HCPs, healthcare organizations, and payers that determine how a product is understood and adopted, help your teams structure their engagement plans and capture the results, and provide the analysis, reports, and research your teams act on. Your people do the engaging. SteepRock helps medical affairs and commercial teams build the expert ecosystem around a therapy before, during, and after launch. We identify and profile the KOLs, DOLs, HCPs, healthcare organizations, and payers that determine how a product is understood and adopted, help your teams structure their engagement plans and capture the results, and provide the analysis, reports, and research your teams ### What are market development services? Market development services in life sciences are the data, analytics, and engagement support services that help a pharmaceutical, biotech, or medical device company identify, understand, and engage the clinicians, researchers, institutions, and payers who influence adoption of a therapy. SteepRock delivers them as results as a service: an AI native platform that brings publicly available, proprietary, licensed third party, and client data into one intelligence environment, and a team that turns that data into the target lists, engagement plans, analyses, and reports a client's teams act on. They sit between clinical development and commercial execution. Regulatory approval establishes that a therapy can be prescribed. Market development establishes that the right experts understand it, discuss it, and are positioned to shape how it is used. Medical affairs and commercial teams share that work, with market access, field, and R&D teams drawing on the same intelligence. SteepRock has provided market development services to more than 400 life science companies since 2001. Every SteepRock statement of work carries the same heading, Market Development Services Include, and under that heading sit the software, the data, and the people a client is contracting for. ### Why this is not a CRM A CRM is a system of record for field activity. It holds what a representative or MSL did, when, and with whom. That is useful, and most of our clients run one. Market development services answer a different question: who should be engaged in the first place, and what has changed since the last conversation. That answer comes from data a CRM does not hold, and it comes before the field activity a CRM records. SteepRock does not compete CRM to CRM and does not ask clients to replace their field execution system. We work alongside it as the intelligence, key expert, grants, compliance, and analysis layer. Many clients load their CRM call records into SteepRock so that engagement planning can draw on their own history together with everything happening outside the company. ### What SteepRock’s market development services include #### KOL & DOL Identification and Profiling Disease agnostic identification of key opinion leaders, digital opinion leaders, rising investigators, and institutional decision makers, profiled across publications, clinical trials, congress activity, claims, referral networks, Open Payments, and social and digital media. #### Congress and Publication Intelligence Session level analysis of major congresses (ASCO, ESMO, ASH, AAN, DDW, ATS and others) and the scientific literature: who is presenting, what they are saying, and how the evidence and the conversation are shifting in your therapeutic area. #### Speaker and Advisory Board Qualification Data driven selection of speakers, moderators, and advisors, matching expertise, audience reach, and network position to the program's objective, so budget goes to the people who will move the market. #### HCP Sentiment and Belief Mapping Structured assessment of where experts stand on the beliefs that drive adoption, including mechanism, efficacy, safety, sequencing, and patient selection, mapped against your strategic imperatives and tracked over time. #### Territory and Account Stakeholder Analytics Speaker to HCP connection mapping, referral network analysis, and account level influence ranking delivered by territory, so field medical and sales teams know who to reach and through whom. ### Who uses market development services Medical Affairs and MSL teams build scientific exchange plans, prioritize field engagement, and demonstrate the impact of medical activity on expert understanding. Commercial and Brand teams plan launches, select peer-to-peer programs, and align promotional strategy with where the expert community stands. Market Access identify the clinical voices and institutions that carry weight with payers, guideline committees, and pathway developers. Field Sales and Key Account Management understand referral flows and influence networks at the territory and account level. Clinical Development and R&D identify qualified investigators and sites and understand the expert landscape before a program enters the clinic. Business Development and Corporate Affairs map the expert and institutional landscape around an asset or a company under evaluation. ### The data the services are built on SteepRock compiles and maintains professional activity data on healthcare professionals and organizations across every disease area. The sources include peer reviewed publications, clinical trial registries, grants, treatment guidelines, congress presentations and continuing education activity, digital and social media presence, and Open Payments records. When a client contracts for them, the sources extend to de-identified patient claims for the United States, refreshed at least four times a year, shared de-identified patient referral networks by indication, prescription and payer data, and enhanced data on healthcare professionals and organizations outside the United States. Clients can add their own data, from CRM interactions to internal research, so that analysis runs across everything they know. Third party data is loaded as received from the provider. Outputs reference the underlying source records so that a user can see where a result came from and open the record itself. ### How market development services are delivered SteepRock's services run on the SteepRock platform, which means every deliverable is refreshable and available to your team in the system after the project ends. The platform is a set of SaaS products that work on the same data, delivered through one interface with unlimited users under an enterprise license. #### SteepRock Embedded Intelligence The unified AI service that operates across every contracted data domain as a single intelligence environment. Authorized users pose questions and requests in natural language and receive cross domain results assembled at once from publications, trials, grants, guidelines, congress activity, digital presence, claims, and the client's own records, then turn those results into summaries, charts, and leadership ready documents. It provides closed loop generative AI analysis, automated insights, and engagement planning. The service follows a standing written rulebook that applies to every question: no invented values, claims labeled as fact or inference, and gaps declared when the data does not support an answer. Each client works in its own private, access controlled workspace, and SteepRock does not use client data to train, validate, or test any AI model. Embedded Intelligence is in production with clients today. #### OLA Opinion Leader Analytics, is the healthcare big data search engine beneath it. OLA identifies and profiles KOLs, DOLs, HCPs, HCOs, systems of care, and payers, and it is where the source data lives. Referral network data adds indication level referral patterns. Ex-US data extends coverage beyond the United States. The OLA API lets a client's own data warehouse query OLA directly. #### OLMS™ The Opinion Leader Management System, the first of its kind when SteepRock introduced it, is the compliant system of record for the client's relationships. It gives medical affairs and commercial teams a 360 degree view of every expert, organization, and account, combining external activity with the client's advisory boards, research collaborations, speaker programs, and field interactions, under role based permissions that keep medical and commercial activity properly separated. Embedded Intelligence is delivered through OLMS. Engagement Capture for Holistic Observations, records, transcribes, and analyzes field medical interactions into structured, searchable engagement records in OLMS. Workflow products complete the platform. The Grants, Giving and Sponsorships Solution and the Investigator Sponsored Trial Solution manage grants and investigator sponsored studies with the review workflow and external user access those programs require. The HCP Engagement Platform plans and tracks engagements across the product life cycle. The Compliance module cross references engagement, payment, and study history for the people a client works with. The AI Speaker Qualifier identifies, qualifies, and recommends speakers for medical education programs. Software is half of the service. SteepRock's desk research analysts run opinion leader identification, mapping, and segmentation, build target, digital opinion leader, and speaker lists for launch readiness and the launch period, configure OLMS workflows and dashboards, train users, and, where a client wants it, build curated prompt libraries with expected results and graded output inside the client's Embedded Intelligence workspace. Clients call us with a question and get an answer from someone who knows their therapeutic area and their configuration. Engagements are scoped by statement of work to a therapeutic area, a set of assets, or a business unit, with the claims sets and referral indications named in the document, and are delivered by a SteepRock team with expertise in the disease area. Outputs range from a single identification project to an always on intelligence function embedded in a franchise. The enterprise license to OLMS includes unlimited authorized users, hosting, support, maintenance, and training, and deployment typically takes weeks from receipt of a purchase order. ### Why SteepRock #### Since 2001. SteepRock pioneered the first Opinion Leader Management System one year before the industry adopted the PhRMA Code, and has operated in this category continuously since. #### 400+ life science clients From emerging biotechs to three of the five largest pharmaceutical companies. #### Disease-agnostic, at scale. One data foundation covers every therapeutic area and geography, so you are not limited to a vendor's prebuilt specialty lists. #### Services and software from one provider. The people delivering the analysis built the platform it runs on, and the platform stays with you when the project ends. #### Compliance built in. Role based permissions keep medical and commercial activity separated, the Compliance module cross references engagement, payment, and study history, and every AI output references the source records behind it. #### What are market development services in pharma? Market development services are the analytics and engagement support services that help a pharmaceutical or biotech company identify, understand, and engage the experts, institutions, and payers who influence how a therapy is adopted. They typically include KOL and DOL identification, congress intelligence, speaker and advisor qualification, HCP sentiment mapping, and stakeholder analytics. #### How are market development services different from a CRM? A CRM records what field people did. Market development services determine who should be engaged, why, and what has changed, from data a CRM does not hold. SteepRock works alongside a client's CRM as the intelligence, key expert, grants, compliance, and analysis layer, and does not compete CRM to CRM. #### How are market development services different from market research? Market research measures what a sample of a market thinks at a point in time. Market development services identify the specific individuals and organizations that shape a market and support ongoing engagement with them. The output is a named, prioritized, continuously updated stakeholder landscape, not a survey result. #### How are market development services different from a KOL management platform? A KOL management platform is software for storing and tracking expert relationships. Market development services are the analytical and engagement support work that populates and uses that platform, deciding who matters, why, and what to do about it. SteepRock provides both, on one platform. #### What does results as a service mean? The client contracts for the outcome, not for software seats or analyst hours: the target lists, engagement plans, analyses, and reports its teams need, produced on SteepRock's platform from SteepRock's data and the client's own, and kept current in the system. The software, the data, and the people arrive together under one statement of work. #### Which SteepRock products deliver market development services? Embedded Intelligence, OLA (Opinion Leader Analytics) with referral network, ex-US, and API options, OLMS (Opinion Leader Management System), ECHO, the Grants, Giving and Sponsorships Solution, the Investigator Sponsored Trial Solution, the HCP Engagement Platform, the Compliance module, and the AI Speaker Qualifier, all delivered through one interface under an enterprise license. #### What data do market development services draw on? - Publicly available U.S. federal research, grant, and clinical-trial databases - Publicly available regulatory and healthcare-transparency data, including payment and transparency disclosures - Standard healthcare provider identifier and registry data - Licensed, de-identified claims-derived analytics for the applicable therapeutic area(s) and indication(s), including aggregated diagnosis, treatment, and patient-journey metrics - Client-selected and publicly available multimedia, including selected social media content #### How does Embedded Intelligence fit into market development services? Embedded Intelligence is the AI layer that works across every data domain a client has contracted. Authorized users ask questions in natural language and receive cross domain results with references to the source records, then turn them into summaries, charts, documents, and engagement plans. It is in production with clients today. #### Is client data used to train AI models? No. SteepRock does not use client data to train, validate, or test any artificial intelligence model. Each client works in its own private, access controlled workspace. #### When in a product's life cycle are market development services used? From early clinical development through loss of exclusivity. Early use focuses on investigator and expert landscape mapping; launch readiness and launch on speaker, advisor, and DOL engagement; and post launch on sentiment tracking, competitive response, and life cycle management. #### Do market development services cover DOLs as well as KOLs? Yes. SteepRock profiles digital opinion leaders, clinicians and researchers whose influence is exercised through digital and social channels, alongside traditional KOLs, and can show where the two overlap and where they do not. #### Are market development services applicable in areas beyond KOL management? Yes. Grants, sponsorships, and investigator-sponsored trials are market development activities in their own right: each one funds an institution, investigator, or program that shapes how a therapy is studied and understood. SteepRock’s EGS (grants, giving, and sponsorships) and ISTS (investigator-sponsored trial) solutions manage those workflows compliantly, and Embedded Intelligence can be layered on top of either. With Embedded Intelligence, a grants or IIS team can ask which investigators and institutions the company has funded over time, how that funding maps to the KOL landscape in a disease area, where there are gaps between funded research and strategic priorities, and what the collective output of funded programs has been - questions that previously required exporting data from three systems and reconciling and aggregating it by hand. The result is that these programs stop being administrative functions and start becoming part of the larger market development picture. ### Talk to us about your therapeutic area Tell us the disease area, geography, and the decision you are trying to make. SteepRock is an AI-native data, analytics, and insights company serving the life sciences industry. Founded in 2001, SteepRock pioneered the first Opinion Leader Management System (OLMS™) — two years before the industry adopted the PhRMA Code — and has spent 25 years helping pharmaceutical, biotech, medical device, animal health, and nutrition companies identify and engage the stakeholders that matter: key opinion leaders (KOLs), digital opinion leaders (DOLs), healthcare professionals (HCPs), healthcare organizations, and payers, across every disease area and geography, from early development through life cycle management. The SteepRock platform combines KOL/DOL identification and analytics (OLA®), stakeholder relationship management (OLMS™), AI-powered HCP engagement capture (ECHO™), congress engagement planning, and grants and investigator-sponsored trial management. SteepRock's unified Embedded Intelligence service operates natively across all contracted data domains as a single intelligence environment, delivering cross-domain analysis, natural-language query, and automated insights no single data set can provide. More than 400 major life science companies have relied on SteepRock — delivered as results, not just software. SteepRock's clients range from top-20 global pharmaceutical companies to emerging biotechs with potential blockbusters. ### What is SteepRock Embedded Intelligence? SteepRock's unified Embedded Intelligence service operates natively across contracted data domains as a single intelligence environment, performing cross-domain inquiry, analysis, and synthesis while delivering enhanced natural-language query, closed-loop generative AI analysis, automated insights, summaries, and graphical content generation that no individual domain or data set can deliver on its own. Learn how key and digital opinion leaders differ, where they overlap, and how to identify both. ### KOL vs. DOL: What's the Difference, and Why It Matters for Life Sciences Strategy By Adria Stapleton, J.D. | Vice President, Research, SteepRock Inc. ##### July 10, 2026 Medical affairs and commercial teams have organized around key opinion leaders for decades, and for good reason: the experts who run pivotal trials and write treatment guidelines shape clinical practice for years. But a growing share of scientific influence now plays out somewhere else entirely, on X, LinkedIn, YouTube, podcasts, and open online communities. It is often driven by voices who never appear on a traditional KOL list. Analyses of major oncology congresses show that discussion of new data on social platforms has grown steadily for over a decade, with interpretation of headline results forming online during the meeting itself rather than after publication [1, 2]. Teams that only watch traditional channels see that shift late. This article lays out what separates a KOL from a DOL, where the two overlap, and what that means for how life sciences teams build their engagement strategy. ### What is a KOL (Key Opinion Leader)? A key opinion leader (KOL) is a physician, researcher, or other healthcare expert whose credentials and body of work give them outsized influence over how their peers think and practice. That influence is built through the traditional machinery of scientific authority: peer-reviewed publications, clinical trial leadership, guideline committee membership, podium presentations at major congresses, and senior roles at academic medical centers and professional societies. KOL influence tends to be deep and institutional. A single KOL may shape guidelines that direct treatment decisions for years, lead the registrational trials behind a new therapy, or train a generation of specialists in their field. That influence builds slowly, and it lasts. ### What is a DOL (Digital Opinion Leader)? A digital opinion leader (DOL) is a healthcare voice whose influence operates primarily through digital and social channels: X, LinkedIn, YouTube, podcasts, blogs, and online medical communities. Peer-reviewed research characterizes DOLs as healthcare professionals with substantial online followings who play a central role in disseminating health information and countering misinformation [3]. What distinguishes a DOL from a merely active account is impact on peers rather than volume of posting. DOL influence tends to be fast and broad. When results drop at a major congress, DOLs are often the first to summarize, contextualize, and critique them, reaching audiences in the tens of thousands before formal literature responds. An analysis of breast cancer oncologists' social media activity across 2024 found that their online conversation spiked around major congresses including ESMO, ASCO, and the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, with DOLs sharing live updates and trial summaries that attracted tens of thousands of views per post [4]. Many DOLs are practicing clinicians; others are researchers, pharmacists, patient advocates, or medical educators. ### KOL vs. DOL: the key differences KOL DOL ##### Primary channels Publications, congresses, guidelines, advisory boards Social media, podcasts, video, online communities ##### Nature of influence Deep, institutional, slow-building Fast, broad, conversational ##### Typical audience Peer specialists, institutions Clinicians, trainees, patients, public ##### How influence is measured Publication and citation record, trial leadership, guideline roles Reach, engagement, share of voice, network position ##### Speed of impact Months to years Hours to days ### The overlap matters more than the distinction Here is the part strategy teams most often get wrong: KOL and DOL are not mutually exclusive categories. They are different modes of influence, and the map of who holds each is constantly shifting. Some of the most influential voices in a therapeutic area are hybrids: guideline authors with large digital followings. Others are pure DOLs with modest publication records but enormous reach among community physicians. And some deeply influential KOLs have no digital footprint at all. Treating these as one list produces blind spots in both directions: engage only traditional KOLs and you miss day-of-data sentiment; chase follower counts and you miss the experts who will actually write the guidelines. Medical affairs leaders increasingly describe the answer as an integrated influence map, a single view that combines digital influence signals with traditional KOL identification so that field teams can prioritize experts who carry weight in both worlds [6, 7]. ### How life sciences teams identify DOLs Follower counts and raw volume are among the least informative signals available. A network analysis of the ESMO 2018 congress conversation illustrates why: commercial accounts made up under 10% of tweeters yet produced roughly 16% of tweets and drew nearly a quarter of all retweets. Even so, they were far less likely than non-commercial voices to be cited or mentioned by their peers [2]. Volume and even retweets can be inflated by sources that carry little genuine influence among clinicians. Rigorous DOL identification weighs signals like these instead: - Relevance. Does this voice consistently discuss the disease area, mechanism, or treatment landscape in question, or is healthcare a minor part of a general feed? - Engagement quality. Are clinicians and researchers responding, sharing, and debating this person’s content, or is engagement primarily from the public? - Network position. Is this voice connected to, cited by, or amplified by other recognized experts? - Velocity and timing. Is this person shaping the conversation at key moments such as data readouts, congress sessions, and label changes, or commenting only after consensus forms? - Trajectory. Rising voices matter as much as established ones. DOL influence changes far faster than KOL standing, and today’s active fellow with a sharp tweetorial habit may be tomorrow’s hybrid expert. Because these signals live across platforms and change daily, DOL identification at scale is an analytics problem, not a manual research task. ### Why the distinction changes engagement strategy KOLs and DOLs warrant different engagement models. Traditional KOL engagement runs through advisory boards, investigator relationships, congress meetings, and publication planning. DOL engagement centers on scientific exchange and education, ensuring that accurate, balanced information reaches the digital conversations where sentiment is actually forming. It also carries compliance considerations specific to public digital channels, including privacy and data usage, fair market value, pharmacovigilance obligations when listening to public conversation, and the distinction between passive listening and active engagement. Medical affairs bodies have treated this as a priority as DOL collaboration has matured [5, 6]. The practical implication for medical affairs teams is a single stakeholder view that tracks both modes of influence: who publishes, who presents, who posts, who gets amplified, and how each expert’s beliefs about science are evolving across all of those channels at once. ### How SteepRock helps SteepRock approaches this as one problem, not two. OLA®(Opinion Leader Analytics) is a proprietary advanced search engine within SteepRock’s Embedded Intelligence service, spanning scientific, commercial, regulatory, and digital data domains across life sciences. OLA identifies and profiles both KOLs and DOLs in any disease area, analyzing publications, clinical trials, congress activity, claims and referral data, and social and digital media in real time. It surfaces the digital voices traditional KOL lists miss alongside the institutional experts they overlap with. SteepRock Embedded Intelligence is the unified, agentic intelligence layer that operates natively across those data domains as a single environment. It brings generative AI directly into the workflow, summarizing expert profiles, synthesizing engagement history, drafting insights, and answering natural-language questions across your stakeholder data. For KOL and DOL strategy, that means a team can pose a question no single data source can answer, such as which rising DOLs matter in a therapeutic area and how expert sentiment has shifted since a congress readout, and receive a synthesized, evidence-linked answer drawn from publications, congress activity, and digital conversation at once. OLMS™ (Opinion Leader Management System) then gives medical affairs and commercial teams one compliant system of record for engaging both KOLs and DOLs, connecting external influence signals with internal engagement history so that the influence map and the engagement plan live in the same place. See how OLA and Embedded Intelligence map KOL and DOL influence in your disease area ### Is a DOL the same as an influencer? Not quite. “Influencer” usually implies consumer marketing. A DOL is defined by scientific or clinical influence exercised through digital channels. The audience is often other healthcare professionals, and the content is scientific exchange rather than promotion. ### Can someone be both a KOL and a DOL? Yes, and hybrid experts are often the most strategically valuable stakeholders: they carry institutional authority into fast-moving digital conversations. Influence maps should treat KOL and DOL as attributes of a person, not exclusive categories. ### How is DOL influence measured? Meaningful measurement combines reach (audience size), engagement (who responds and shares), relevance (topical focus), and network position (amplification by other experts) — tracked over time, because digital influence shifts quickly. ### Why do medical affairs teams track DOLs? Because scientific sentiment now forms in digital channels first. At major congresses, interpretation of new data often crystallizes on social platforms within hours — before formal publication [1, 5]. Teams that only monitor traditional channels see that shift late. References - Pemmaraju N, Thompson MA, Mesa RA, Desai T. By Alyssa Cook | COO and SVP Client Solutions, SteepRock, Inc ##### October 1, 2026 ### The questions every program manager gets asked and can’t answer quickly Every grants and investigator-initiated study program I have worked on holds the same records. Requests received. Committees convened. Fair market value assessments. Contracts, milestones, payments, outcomes reports, and the reasons behind every approval and every decline. Some of these programs have been running for more than fifteen years, and the records are deep. What none of them could do, until recently, was answer a question across those records. The funding history sat in the grants system. The investigator’s publications and trials sat somewhere else. The company’s engagement history with that investigator sat in a third place. When leadership asked which investigators the company had funded in a disease area and how that compared to who was shaping it, the answer took days and arrived as a spreadsheet someone built by hand. It was out of date by the time it was presented. That has changed. The AI capability we run on our own grants and investigator study systems, SteepRock Embedded Intelligence, reads across the funding record, the investigator profile and the engagement history in one session and produces the answer as a finished report. This article covers the questions that matter, why the compliance floor every vendor offers doesn’t get you there, and what to ask any vendor who says their system does the same thing. If you are being asked to consolidate these programs onto a single suite, the questions at the end are what I would settle before agreeing. ### A note on nomenclature The industry uses several names for the same programs, and the terms can be confusing between companies. Programs that fund education and activities. Independent medical education (IME) grants, sometimes called continuing medical education (CME) grants, to accredited providers. Charitable donations and corporate giving to patient advocacy groups and foundations. Sponsorships of third-party meetings and conferences. Fellowships that fund postdoctoral research and training. Programs that fund research. Investigator-initiated studies (IIS), also called investigator-initiated trials (IIT), investigator-sponsored trials (IST) or investigator-initiated research (IIR). The investigator conceives the study, the company funds it, and the investigator is the sponsor under FDA regulations. Company-sponsored real-world evidence and health economics studies often run through the same infrastructure. On our platform, education programs run through the Educational Grants Solution™ (EGS™), also offered as the Global Grant Solution, and research programs through the Investigator Sponsored Trial Solution™ (ISTS™). Their shared foundation is what makes the questions below answerable, and I will come back to why. ### Seven questions that change how a program is run Program managers know which questions they have never been able to answer quickly. They are the same ones leadership asks at every review and every renewal, and every time the answer has meant a manual compilation. Who have we funded over time, and how does that map to the expert landscape in the disease area? This is the strategic question. A grants or investigator study program is a map of where the company has placed its research investment across the physicians and institutions that shape how a therapy is studied and understood. Until now that map existed in fragments, assembled by hand for a leadership meeting. It can now be produced from the program’s own records, cross-referenced against the publication, clinical trial, congress, claims and payment data that describes each investigator’s standing in the field. Figure 1. Where the money went. Each dot is an investigator; the vertical axis is five-year company funding, the horizontal axis is standing in the field. Illustrative example built on synthetic data; no client data is shown. Where are the gaps between what we have funded and what our strategy calls for? This follows from the first question but is harder to do by hand, because it means comparing the funding record against the medical and commercial priorities. A session can show which therapeutic areas, and research questions have received funding and which have not, and can identify investigators whose work aligns with an unfunded priority. What has the collective output of funded programs been? When a program comes up for renewal, or leadership asks whether the investment was worth it, the answer lives in the milestones, publications, outcomes reports and close-out summaries the program has collected over its life. Compiling it is the most labor-intensive task of the year for many program managers. The program can now produce it. How long does a request take from submission to decision, and is that normal? Cycle time is the metric every program manager gets asked about and nobody can benchmark, because no public source tells you whether a thirty-day median is fast or slow for your kind of program. This summer one of our clients received a quarter-to-date grants executive report and a request cycle time analysis for a mid-year leadership review, produced from their own portal data and delivered as a finished presentation [2]. Does this investigator have a conflict? Before funding an investigator, the program needs to know whether that person is also a paid speaker for the company, is receiving funding from another program at the same company, has Open Payments records that would raise a question at audit, or holds a competing commercial relationship. That check means looking across the grants system, the speaker program, the engagement history and the payment data. In most organizations it is done by email. Here it is done in the session, from the same data layer that holds the investigator’s full profile. Does this budget line exceed fair market value? Every funding request for services is assessed against the program’s fair market value schedule. In most programs the manager pulls the rate table, compares each line, and documents the result. The comparison can now be run in the session, with the lines that exceed the schedule flagged and a record of the check that a reviewer or an auditor can trace. Did the funded work change anything, and can we show it? This is what leadership means when it asks about return, and it has two different answers depending on the program. For investigator studies, the return is evidence. Did the funded studies publish, where, and were they cited? Did any reach a guideline, a label change or a follow-on company-sponsored trial? Did the investigators we funded become more active in the disease area afterward, in trials and at congresses, than comparable investigators we did not fund? That last comparison needs the expert data layer, not the grants system, and it is the closest thing to a return calculation these programs can defend. For education grants the word “return” needs care. The PhRMA Code and the ACCME standards exist to keep grant decisions apart from commercial outcomes, so the answer can never be about prescribing or product. It can be about the gap the activity was funded to close. Accredited providers already report outcomes against Moore’s framework, from participation and satisfaction through learning, competence, performance and patient health, in the close-out reports the program collects. Almost no program reads those reports across a portfolio. Read together, they answer a question a compliance officer will accept: of the forty activities we funded this year, how many reported a measured change in competence or performance, and which gaps are still open. Figure 2. The same program read for results. Left: evidence produced by funded investigators against a comparable unfunded group. Right: outcomes reported by accredited providers, by Moore level, across a year of funded activities. Illustrative example built on synthetic data; no client data is shown. These questions work for one reason: the programs, the expert profiles and the engagement history are on the same system, and the AI reads across all of them under the same permission rules that govern who sees what in the program itself. A capability bolted onto a grants system alone can’t answer most of them, because most of the data it needs isn’t there. ### Where the reviewer still sits None of this removes a person from the decision. The AI does not approve a grant, set a fair market value figure or clear a conflict. It produces the analysis and the record behind it, names the sources it drew on, and a reviewer signs off. When something in the record can’t be verified, a fair market value figure, an investigator credential, a prior payment, it should say so and leave the gap visible. We have published an example of ours doing exactly that [3], and I would ask any vendor for the same before believing a demo. ### The compliance floor, and why it is the floor Grants systems generally cover compliance, and for good reason. The obligations are real. The rules behind that floor are the federal Anti-Kickback Statute and the Office of Inspector General’s compliance guidance for manufacturers [4][6], the Sunshine Act and its Open Payments reporting [7], the PhRMA Code [8], the ACCME Standards for Integrity and Independence [9] and, in Europe, the EFPIA Code [10]. When a company funds an investigator-initiated study, the FDA rules for sponsors and investigators at 21 C.F.R. Part 312 apply as well [11]. Grants systems generally handle request submission, routing, committee review, contracting and payment tracking. That is the floor. What separates a program that can defend itself at audit from one that can’t is the quality of the record behind each decision: who reviewed it, on what basis, against what fair market value standard, with what conflict check, and what the program produced as a result. And what separates a program that runs as an administrative function from one that runs as part of the company’s medical and market development strategy is the ability to ask questions across its own history. The floor doesn’t give you that. ### Eight questions to put to any grants or investigator study vendor These are the questions I would want answered in writing before signing up, and they are the ones we expect to be asked ourselves. - Can your system answer a question that draws on the grants record, the investigator’s profile and the company’s engagement history in a single session, or do I have to export and reconcile? - How does the AI inherit the permission model that separates medical from commercial activity? Can a commercial user, or a commercial-facing agent, see anything about a pending request? - When the AI produces a recommendation on a grant or a study, what in the record shows a reviewer that it was AI-produced, which sources it drew on, and what the reviewer changed? - What does the system do when a fair market value figure, an investigator credential or a prior payment can’t be verified from the record? Show me a published example of it declining to answer. - How many grants and investigator study programs have you administered end to end, from concept through outcomes reporting, over how many years? - Can my administrators change forms, routing rules, reviewer pools and thresholds without a vendor release or a paid project? What happens to my configuration and history at each release? - Can the system show what funded work produced afterward: publications, trials and congress activity for funded investigators against a comparable unfunded group, and provider-reported outcomes by Moore level aggregated across a grants portfolio? - Who owns the program record at the end of the term, in what format does it leave, and how long is it retained after termination? ### Who wrote this, and why I lead operations and client solutions at SteepRock, which means the teams that implement our systems, support our clients day to day, and sit with them while they put the work to use. I joined SteepRock in 2004, and the 2008 investigator-initiated research deployment for a top-ten pharmaceutical company described below was one of my early engagements. I have worked on grants and investigator-initiated study programs continuously since. The questions in this article are the ones I hear from many program managers and compliance officers we work with. SteepRock has administered these programs continuously since it put a dedicated investigator-initiated research system, with a fully integrated backend database, into production for a top-ten pharmaceutical company in 2008. Those programs run today through EGS and ISTS on a single-tenant, backward-compatible platform that has carried client configurations forward across every release. Since 2025 the finished reporting these programs need has been produced by SteepRock Embedded Intelligence and included in the license, with no charge by the document or by the question. This article takes the opposite approach. It walks through ten weeks of measured usage data from a live deployment of SteepRock's Embedded Intelligence (EI) layer at a global medical technology company, separates what was measured from what was assumed, and shows the calculation in full. The client cannot be named here, but the underlying data — usage logs, deliverable counts, completion rates — is theirs, drawn from production deployment between late April and early July 2026. ### What Embedded Intelligence Is Embedded Intelligence is SteepRock's unified intelligence layer: an AI capability that works natively across a client's own data, applicable proprietary and licensed sources, and SteepRock's Opinion Leader Management System (OLMS) and Opinion Leader Analytics (OLA) search engine. Rather than answering questions in isolation, EI performs cross-domain inquiry, analysis, and insight generation — and produces finished work products: customer profiles, congress strategies, advisory-board plans, executive presentations, and intelligence digests, assembled directly from the data already in production. The value of EI is not measured in answers delivered but in deliverables completed — the research-and-synthesis work that otherwise consumes hours of skilled staff time per item. ### Ten Weeks - Measured Between April 29, 2026 and July 7, 2026, a nine-person commercial team at a top 10 global med tech organization put EI into daily use. The headline facts below are measured from usage logs, not estimated: Adoption was full and sustained. All nine licensed users were active in every one of the ten weeks. This was not a pilot with a burst of curiosity followed by decay — usage held week over week, embedded in the daily workflow. The work was substantial. The team completed 143 deliverables in the period, concentrated in the highest-value engagement work: KOL and customer profiling — the single most time-consuming category of manual research — accounted for nearly half of all engagements, followed by congress strategy, executive slides and briefs, and advisory-board planning. Annualized, the run-rate is approximately 756 deliverables per year, or about 2,270 recovered staff hours. The output was dependable. Roughly 90% of tasks completed successfully (292 successful deliverable runs out of 323 total turns), which means the time saved was realized rather than lost to rework. ### The Math, With Assumptions Labeled The model is simple: measured work volume × time saved per deliverable × fully loaded cost per hour. Two of those three inputs are measured. Deliverable volume, active users, and completion rate come straight from the usage logs. The other two are modeled — stated management assumptions: hours saved per deliverable (a base case of 3 hours, which is conservative for a full customer profile or a congress plan) and a fully loaded employee cost of $250,000–$300,000 per year, or $120–$144 per hour on a 2,080-hour basis. Run the model across three scenarios and the reading is straightforward: even the base case clears the fully loaded cost of one employee. A nine-person team, ten weeks in, is already generating approximately one full-time employee of additional capacity. EI is, in effect, a self-funding headcount. How sensitive is the result to those assumptions? The table below shows the annualized value at three hours-saved levels and both ends of the loaded-cost range, so readers can locate the break-even point and the upside for themselves. Against a fully loaded employee cost of $250,000–$300,000, the model breaks even at roughly 2.3–3.3 hours saved per deliverable — below the base case, and well below what a full customer profile or congress plan plausibly saves. Value @ $120/hr Hours saved per deliverable Value @ $144/hr FTE equivalent ##### 1.5 hrs (below break-even) Publications, congresses, guidelines, advisory boards Social media, podcasts, video, online communities ##### 3 hrs (base case) Deep, institutional, slow-building Fast, broad, conversational ##### 6 hrs (upside) Peer specialists, institutions Clinicians, trainees, patients, public Sensitivity of annualized value: 756 deliverables/yr × hours saved × loaded hourly cost. FTE equivalent on a 2,080-hour basis. Even the 1.5-hour case — half the base assumption — returns more than half the cost of an employee. A note on the sample: we acknowledge that a 10-week deployment with nine desk users is a limited window for long-term generalization — seasonality, workload shifts, and broader user heterogeneity may change run-rates over time. That said, the extrapolation is intentionally conservative: we annualized observed deliverable run-rates without inflating the measured hours-saved per deliverable. Presenting measured results alongside clearly labeled modeled assumptions preserves transparency and ensures the extrapolation errs on the side of caution. ### Speak with the client The company featured in this case study has not been named at their request. Every finding is a real output of that session. ### When the number is wrong, the AI should say so #### Work you can act on and defend. A P&T access and formulary analysis for a global pharmaceutical client, run in SteepRock Embedded Intelligence in August 2026. Every finding below is an actual output of that session. ##### September 2, 2026 ### Most AI does not say so By June 2026, a public database had documented 1,598 court cases worldwide in which AI-fabricated content, including invented citations, fake quotes, and rulings that never existed, was filed with a court, and the tool involved was almost always a consumer chatbot the professional already had [1]. In the founding case, a lawyer confronted about fake citations asked the chatbot to confirm they were real, and it confirmed its own fabrications [2]. The pattern is not confined to law. An audit of 2.5 million biomedical papers, published in The Lancet in May 2026, found fabricated references in roughly 2,800 of them, at a rate that has risen twelvefold since 2023 [3]. In a global survey of clinicians across 15 specialties, 91.8 percent reported encountering AI hallucinations, and 84.7 percent believed those errors could cause patient harm [4]. Companies including Pfizer, Novartis, Sanofi, GSK, and AstraZeneca, five of the largest in the industry, have moved generative AI from pilots to enterprise scale in medical affairs, and their medical affairs teams must now demonstrate the accuracy and sourcing of AI-assisted work before it is used [6]. Three of those five companies use SteepRock Market Development Services, including Embedded Intelligence, and we see that requirement emerging everywhere. Every chatbot answer arrives fluent and confident, whether it is right or wrong. What follows is what it looks like when an AI checks its own number, fails it, and says so. ### The number that did not add up In August 2026, a global pharmaceutical company preparing for a potential launch asked SteepRock to run a pharmacy and therapeutics (P&T) access analysis across three major US health systems: a large academic medical center, an integrated payer-provider system, and a community health system. The client brought its own prompts for the work. The analysis ran in Embedded Intelligence (EI), connected to the client's engagement records in OLMS and to OLA's licensed data. Partway through, the analysis produced a payer mix for one of the largest treatment programs in the country. The figure looked fine. It was built from 231 pharmacy claims. The licensed national dataset in the same session held 447,957 claims for the same drug codes over the same window. One of the biggest programs in the country accounting for 0.052 percent of national volume is not plausible, and EI said so. It compared the institutional figure to the national total, failed it, declined to present the payer mix, and explained why: the connected linkage data tied only 160 providers of any specialty to the institution, and only 16 in the relevant specialty. The math was fine. The provider roster underneath it was thin. The fix is a better roster, not a better prompt. A stand-alone assistant would have presented that payer mix. It has no national total to check against, so it reports what it finds, and it reports it with the same confidence whether the number is right or wrong. ### What else the session found Four more findings, each from data the client's own analysis had not reached. A conflict the client had not priced in. Open Payments records showed the client had paid the head of the academic center's clinical program roughly $27,000 in consulting and related fees from 2023 to 2025, most of it in 2025. Under a standard conflict-of-interest policy, the most influential clinical voice on this formulary decision may be the one person required to recuse from it. An assumption that ran backwards. Trial registry data showed both academic systems had active trial relationships with a competitor developing a product in the same class, and neither had a confirmed trial relationship with the client. The client's earlier analysis assumed the reverse. A quality measure that penalizes new products at launch. The relevant quality measures run off coded value sets that will not include a newly approved product on day one. Patients started on it will score as non-compliant, automatically, until those value sets update. That argues for timing protocol changes to a calendar-year boundary. Two corrected premises. EI flagged two assumptions in the client's own analysis as unsupported by the connected data and showed the records behind each. The client is reviewing both. It also declined to do several things it was asked to do. It would not fabricate committee rosters, would not invent base rates, would not assert trial participation it could not confirm, labeled its reconstructions as reconstructions, and stopped to ask when a prompt was ambiguous. ### Why it worked Three things, and the model is not one of them. EI runs Claude, the same model available in any enterprise seat. What changes the result is what the model is connected to, the rules it works under, and how the session is run. The data. EI ran in the client's own private, access-controlled workspace. Everything in the table below was queried live during the session. The plausibility check that caught the bad number exists only because the national total was in the room to compare against. Embedded Intelligence Data source Value @ $144/hr Stand-alone assistant ##### Your engagement records in OLMS Connected No access ##### Licensed national pharmacy claims ##### Provider-to-institution linkage ##### Open Payments records ##### Clinical trial registries ##### Certified treatment center list (about 8,700 centers) Your approved product and context documents The rules. Every question in EI, whether it comes from the team's shared prompt library or is typed fresh, runs under written rules that SteepRock engineers, tests, and maintains: no guessing where data is missing, every figure labeled as confirmed or inferred, gaps declared, never filled, and every claim traced to a connected source, an attached file, or the user's own input. Record-level claims link back to the original entry in OLMS. Public information is cited. The working method. The client's own prompts for this use case, four of them, were well written by any standard. SteepRock's team still rebuilt them into a ten-prompt library before the session, making fourteen corrections, writing down the expected result for each prompt, and grading every output against that standard. The rebuild is part of why the bad number was caught: the client's original sequence asked for the payer breakdown first and the data-quality check second, and a caveat delivered after a number does not undo the number. The rebuild made the capture check a precondition. EI's rules would have labeled the 231-claim figure as unreliable; the rebuilt prompt let EI withhold it altogether. That is the difference between a platform and a platform with a tested prompt library, and SteepRock delivers both. The client's original prompts, and what the rebuild changed in each, are in the appendix. ### Why this matters now Medical affairs teams at large manufacturers are moving generative AI from pilots into everyday work, and the regulatory expectation is moving with them. FDA's January 2025 draft guidance and the FDA and EMA's joint Guiding Principles of Good AI Practice in Drug Development, published in January 2026, expect AI whose outputs can be audited, and the EU AI Act's high-risk obligations, deferred by the Digital Omnibus adopted in July 2026, apply from December 2, 2027 for standalone systems and August 2, 2028 for AI embedded in regulated products [5]. The practical requirement is the same in every case: a team has to be able to show where a number came from and why it can be trusted. A screenshot of a chat does not meet that bar. A documented session, with expected results written down before execution and every output reviewed against them, does.\ ### What this means for your team Medical and scientific teams get answers grounded in real records, every claim labeled as confirmed or inferred, and limitations stated next to the findings. Account and access teams get the questions that decide a launch answered from licensed data a general assistant cannot reach: who decides, who pays, who influences, and where competitors already stand. Compliance teams get a paper trail: expected results documented before execution, every output reviewed against them, and every claim traceable to its source, delivered as part of the engagement. ### Bring us your prompts SteepRock works exclusively with life sciences manufacturers in pharma, biotech, and medical devices, and EI's rules were written for that regulated environment. If your team already has a set of prompts it relies on, send us your ten best. We will rebuild them, write down the expected results, run them against your connected data in EI, and show you what changes. The client's identity in this case study is protected; if you would like to hear their experience directly, contact us and we will ask. Contact Us ### Appendix: the prompts, as the client wrote them The client arrived with four prompts for this use case. They were well written, and the rebuild still produced fourteen corrections across the ten-prompt library that ran. The four are shown here in the client's own words, anonymized only where names appeared. The rebuilt versions are not shown. Prompt 3.1: Institutional access profile “Build a P&T preparation profile for [Health System A]. Cover: the relevant patient volume flowing through it, the payer channel mix for that population, current prescribing concentration in the drug class and which prescribers drive it, the referral catchment feeding the institution, and the specialty decision-makers affiliated with it. Be explicit about which figures come from claims and which are inferred.” What the rebuild changed. One prompt asking five questions returns five shallow answers. The rebuild separated it into three prompts covering decision structure, the institutional profile, and the influence network, and bound the unit of analysis, because a satellite facility and a formulary authority are not interchangeable. Prompt 3.2: Payer channel and rejection lens “For the relevant patient population over the last twelve months, break down pharmacy claims by payer channel and by paid, rejected and reversed status. Identify where rejections cluster and what that suggests about the access barriers we should expect to be raised in a P&T review.” Prompt 3.3: Bias and capture check “Before I read anything into that breakdown, tell me where this data is incomplete. For each payer channel, state whether it is reliably captured, partially captured or substantially under-captured in this dataset, and explain the mechanism behind any under-capture. Then tell me which of the conclusions I might reasonably have drawn from the previous output are not safe to draw, and restate the findings that do survive. Do not soften this — if a number should not be used, say so.” What the rebuild changed. The best instinct in the set: the client knew their data had gaps and asked to have them exposed. The flaw was the order. By the time this prompt runs, the payer numbers are already on screen, and a caveat delivered after a number does not undo the number. The rebuild merged the two with the order reversed, making the capture check a precondition. That reversal is what let EI withhold the misleading figure. Prompt 3.4: Public P&T pre-read “Pull together what is publicly known about how large integrated health systems have structured recent P&T reviews for novel therapies in this class — evidence they weight, comparators they demand, and cost-effectiveness arguments that have landed. Turn it into an anticipated-questions pre-read with our supporting evidence mapped against each.” What the rebuild changed. Replaced by a synthesis pre-read built from the outputs of the full ten-prompt library, so anticipated questions are grounded in the specific institutions under review. The rebuild also added six subjects the original set did not touch, covering order-set reality, institutional economics, competitive timing, research relationships, quality metrics, and discharge continuity, each of which produced one of the findings above. SteepRock is a market development service provider for the life sciences industry. Founded in 2001, SteepRock pioneered the first Opinion Leader Management System (OLMS) and has spent 25 years helping pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device companies identify and engage the key opinion leaders, digital opinion leaders, healthcare professionals, healthcare organizations, and payers that matter to their products. SteepRock combines proprietary AI powered software with a service team that handles the work, and more than 400 life science companies have relied on it. ### What is OLA? OLA (Opinion Leader Analytics) is a healthcare big data search engine that identifies and profiles KOLs, DOLs, HCPs, healthcare organizations, systems of care, and payers across every disease area. It analyzes publications, clinical trials, congress activity, claims data, referral networks, Open Payments records, and social and digital media in real time. ### What is OLMS? OLMS (Opinion Leader Management System) is a stakeholder management platform that gives medical affairs and commercial teams a 360 degree view of every expert, organization, and account that matters to their brand. It layers real time external activity with internal engagements such as advisory boards, clinical research, and speaker programs in one compliant system of record. ### What is SteepRock Embedded Intelligence? Embedded Intelligence is SteepRock’s unified AI service. It operates across every contracted data domain as a single intelligence environment, performing cross domain inquiry, analysis, and synthesis, and delivering natural language query, closed loop generative AI analysis, automated insights, summaries, graphical content, and engagement planning. It is in production with clients today. ### Who uses SteepRock? Medical affairs, MSL, commercial, marketing, market access, sales, key account management, R&D, and business development teams at pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device companies, from emerging biotechs to three of the five largest pharmaceutical companies. ### How is SteepRock different from other KOL management platforms? SteepRock is not a CRM vendor and does not compete CRM to CRM. It is a market development service provider: the software is proprietary and AI native, and it comes with a team of about twenty people who do the identification, profiling, analysis, and engagement planning work with the client. Embedded Intelligence plans engagement from more source data than a CRM holds, and it is in production now. ### Is a DOL the same as an influencer? A digital opinion leader (DOL) is a healthcare professional whose influence is exercised through digital channels such as social media, podcasts, and online publications. Unlike a general influencer, a DOL’s authority rests on clinical or scientific credentials. ### Can someone be both a KOL and a DOL? Yes. Many recognized clinical experts also have a substantial digital presence. SteepRock measures both kinds of influence separately so teams can see where a person’s reach actually comes from. ### How is DOL influence measured? SteepRock measures DOL influence from digital activity: audience size, engagement, the clinical relevance of what is shared, the networks the person reaches, and how that activity connects to publications, trials, and congress presence. ### Why do medical affairs teams track DOLs? Because a growing share of the conversation that shapes clinical opinion now happens online. Tracking DOLs lets medical affairs teams understand what is being said about a disease area or product, identify emerging voices early, and plan scientific exchange with the people who reach the clinicians that matter. ## What Is a KOL Platform? The Life Sciences Definition | SteepRock https://www.steeprockinc.com/what-is-a-kol-platform What is a KOL platform? The life sciences definition: what it does, the data behind it, and how pharma, biotech and medtech teams use one. ### What Is a KOL Platform, and What Isn’t? Defining the category for pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, and nutrition companies By the SteepRock Client Services Team | A collaboration drawing on 25 years of KOL engagement practice ##### July 28, 2026 ### Which “KOL platform” are you evaluating for life sciences? Search the term today and you will mostly find influencer marketing software: tools for creators, sponsored posts, and campaign payments. That is a legitimate category. It just isn’t yours. So before you shortlist a single vendor, agree on the definition: A KOL platform is technology that helps life sciences organizations, including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, and nutrition companies, identify, understand, and compliantly engage the scientific experts who shape medical practice and scientific communication. That definition is not spin; it is history. “Opinion leader” comes from 1940s communications research, and the concept entered medicine in the 1950s through the landmark Medical Innovation study of how physicians adopt new therapies.1 The pharmaceutical industry has organized expert engagement around it ever since.2 The marketing world borrowed the vocabulary half a century later. This article gives it back its meaning. ### One name, two categories Marketing KOL platforms index social creators and measure success in reach and conversion. Scientific KOL platforms serve medical affairs and commercial teams. They map the experts in a therapeutic area through publications, trials, guidelines, and congress and digital activity, and they operate under rules that consumer tools were never built for: transparency reporting,3 fair market value, and the separation of promotional and non-promotional engagement. Pick from the wrong category and the cost is immediate. The tool cannot say who leads the pivotal trials in your indication, which experts are shaping the treatment paradigm, or whether your engagement history with a clinician across every function is compliant. That is not a feature gap. It is the wrong model of influence entirely. ### Engagement is the goal Identification is not the destination. Profiles, rankings, and network maps are the means; engagement is the goal, because engagement is how an organization earns its place in scientific communication. Scientific opinion is formed in conversation: at advisory boards, in congress hallways, in MSL exchanges, and increasingly in digital threads. An organization that only observes that conversation has intelligence. One that engages in it compliantly, credibly, and consistently helps advance it. Evidence gaps get surfaced, education reaches the clinicians who change care, and the science around a therapy is built on genuine exchange rather than promotion. Commercial teams engage the same experts within promotional rules, which is exactly why the platform must keep the two motions coordinated yet distinct. A true KOL platform is engagement infrastructure, not a directory. Identification, influence mapping, insight generation, and cross-functional coordination, increasingly with AI embedded in the workflow, all exist to shorten the path from “we know who matters” to “we are in a meaningful, compliant dialogue with them.” ### Three kinds of experts, one system of influence Medical influence now operates in three layers, and the strategic value of engagement is different in each. Treating them as one undifferentiated “KOL list,” or covering only one layer, forfeits most of what engagement can achieve. - Traditional KOLs are the evidence layer. Principal investigators, guideline authors, and society leaders do not merely comment on the evidence; they generate it. Engagement here means a seat in evidence generation itself: trial leadership, investigator-initiated studies, and advisory relationships that surface data gaps while they can still be addressed. Diffusion research has shown since the 1950s that physicians adopt new therapies through trusted peers, not mass communication.1 These are the peers the peers trust. - DOLs are the interpretation layer. Data readouts are now analyzed in public and in near-real time; a credentialed expert’s congress thread reaches practicing clinicians in hours, not publication cycles.4 Whether the first widely read interpretation of your data is accurate, contextualized, and scientifically grounded depends on whether you have genuine relationships in that channel before the readout, not after. As we have argued in our KOL vs. DOL analysis,6 the two roles increasingly overlap in the same individuals, which is precisely why they must be understood and engaged as distinct modes of influence. Peer-reviewed work now formally separates DOLs from social media influencers on the dimension that matters: credentials.5 - Community and emerging voices are the adoption layer. This is the layer with the strongest outcome evidence: a Cochrane review of randomized trials found that local opinion leaders measurably improve clinicians’ compliance with evidence-based practice. 7 Community clinicians determine real-world uptake; advocacy leaders shape access, policy, and trial recruitment; and today’s rising investigators are the next decade’s guideline authors. Those relationships are best begun before everyone else wants them. These are not three audiences. They are one system: evidence is generated at the top, interpreted in digital channels, and adopted in the community. An engagement strategy that skips a layer breaks the chain from evidence to practice and cedes that layer to a competitor who didn’t. ### The SteepRock standard SteepRock has built KOL and expert-engagement technology exclusively for life sciences since 2001, when it pioneered the first Opinion Leader Management System (OLMS), before “KOL platform” was a search term. More than 400 pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device, and nutrition companies have relied on our platforms: - OLA (Opinion Leader Analytics): Continuously analyzes publications, clinical trials, congress participation, claims data, referral networks, Open Payments records, and digital media to identify and measure scientific influence in real time. - OLMS (Opinion Leader Management System): Manages the complete lifecycle of compliant expert engagement, from planning and interactions to advisory boards, insights, and relationship history. - Embedded Intelligence: AI-native capabilities that transform internal and external data into conversational insights, recommendations, summaries, and live analytics. All are built to see the three layers of influence in one system. Nine of the ten largest pharmaceutical companies have engaged SteepRock at one time or another, and it is not uncommon for clients to work with us for decades. In a category defined by long-term, compliant expert relationships, that longevity is the point. Everything else is influencer marketing software. Both categories can be excellent at what they do; they just shouldn’t share a name without a definition. So, once more: which “KOL platform” are you evaluating? ### The overlap matters more than the distinction Here is the part strategy teams most often get wrong: KOL and DOL are not mutually exclusive categories. See how OLA and Embedded Intelligence map KOL and DOL influence in your disease area Here is the part strategy teams most often get wrong: KOL and DOL are not mutually exclusive categories. They are different modes of influence, and the map of who holds each is constantly shifting. Some of the most influential voices in a therapeutic area are hybrids — guideline authors with large digital followings. Others are pure DOLs with modest publication records but enormous reach among community physicians. Some deeply influential KOLs have no digital footprint at all Medical affairs leaders increasingly describe the answer as an integrated influence map — one view that combines digital influence signals with traditional KOL identification, so field teams can prioritize experts who carry weight in both worlds [6, 7]. Follower counts are the least informative signal available, not least because congress-period conversation attracts noise: one analysis of ESMO congress activity found heterogeneous sources competing for attention in the same hashtags, including substantial commercial and low-quality content [2]. Rigorous DOL identification weighs signals like these instead: - Relevance. Does this voice consistently discuss the disease area, mechanism, or treatment landscape in question — or is healthcare a minor part of a general feed? - Velocity and timing. Is this person shaping the conversation at key moments — data readouts, congress sessions, label changes — or commenting after consensus forms? KOLs and DOLs warrant different engagement models. Traditional KOL engagement runs through advisory boards, investigator relationships, congress meetings, and publication planning. DOL engagement centers on scientific exchange and education — making sure accurate, balanced information reaches the digital conversations where sentiment is actually forming — and it carries compliance considerations specific to public digital channels, a topic medical affairs bodies have flagged as a priority as DOL collaboration matures [6]. The practical implication for medical affairs teams is a single stakeholder view that tracks both modes of influence: who publishes, who presents, who posts, who gets amplified — and how each expert’s beliefs about the science are evolving across all of those channels at once. OLA™ (Opinion Leader Analytics) is a proprietary advanced search engine within SteepRock’s Embedded Intelligence service, spanning scientific, commercial, regulatory, and digital data domains across life sciences. OLA identifies and profiles both KOLs and DOLs in any disease area, analyzing publications, clinical trials, congress activity, claims and referral data, and social and digital media in real time — surfacing the digital voices traditional KOL lists miss alongside the institutional experts they overlap with. SteepRock Embedded Intelligence is the unified, agentic intelligence layer that operates natively across those data domains as a single environment. It brings generative AI directly into the workflow — summarizing expert profiles, synthesizing engagement history, drafting insights, and answering natural-language questions across your stakeholder data. For KOL/DOL strategy, that means a team can ask questions no single data source can answer — “Who are the rising DOLs in our therapeutic area, and how has expert sentiment shifted since the congress readout?” — and get a synthesized, evidence-linked answer drawn from publications, congress activity, and digital conversation at once. OLMS™ (Opinion Leader Management System) then gives medical affairs and commercial teams one compliant system of record for engaging both KOLs and DOLs — connecting external influence signals with internal engagement history, so the influence map and the engagement plan live in the same place. See how OLA and Embedded Intelligence map KOL and DOL influence in your disease area: Software that helps life sciences organizations identify, profile, map, and, above all, compliantly engage the physicians, researchers, and scientific experts who shape clinical practice, using data from publications, trials, congresses, guidelines, and digital channels. ### Is a KOL platform the same as an influencer marketing platform? No. Influencer platforms manage consumer creators and campaigns. KOL platforms manage compliant relationships with credentialed scientific experts. Same name, entirely different purpose. ### What is a Digital Opinion Leader (DOL)? A credentialed healthcare expert whose influence flows primarily through digital channels such as X/Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, or podcasts. DOLs are part of the modern KOL landscape, not marketing influencers. References 1. Coleman JS, Katz E, Menzel H. Medical Innovation: A Diffusion Study. Bobbs-Merrill, 1966.
